Looking Glass Arts has created a comprehensive 4-week program for high school students interested in deeply exploring the art of video filmmaking. The program is appropriate for beginner filmmakers as well as advanced students and can be taken in its full 4-week format or broken into 1-week modules.
Using a multi-dimensional approach to developing, shooting and editing a film, the participants will learn the ancient art of story telling with the contemporary tools and techniques of video cameras and computers.
The 4-week timeline begins with learning the professional tools of production (sound, lights, camera, action), followed by story development and film production itself (with all the skills necessary to assemble and manage the shoot). Students will then move into editing on computers (can I make that scene work better?) and finishing (mixing, color correction and screening to admiring fans).
This approach follows the classic “Hero’s Journey” as described in Joseph Campbell’s book “The Hero with a Thousand Faces.”
Week 1 June 18-22
“The Departure”
Introduction, building teamwork and camaraderie, learning the equipment through short film creation and activities, plus story creation & scriptwriting.
Week 2 June 25-29
“The Initiation”
Production of individual films in small groups.
Weeks 3&4 July 2-6 & July 9-13
“The Return”
Editing, scoring, sound design, foley, mixing, and mastering on computers. Finishing up with a formal screening of films.
Interspersed throughout the camp are fun, cross-over activities such as Aikido to introduce how the mind/body connection leads to greater creativity and smooth camera-work; or dancing and drumming to reveal the rhythm of editing & mixing.
This hands-on experience will challenge the norm and explore the nature of creativity.
The class size is limited to 16 students per 4-week session. All equipment and materials will be provided by Looking Glass Arts, Inc.
