Recording Retreats

“Music has the power to make me feel good like nothing else does. It gives me some peace for a while. Takes me back to who I really am.”

-Gil Scott-Heron

The LGA fully-funded recording retreats were established as a response to the fact that recording work can be prohibitively expensive for many musicians. LGA recognizes these challenges and seeks to support musicians on their journey to document their work. The 4-6 day residency affords musicians time to record in the barn with our engineer, Rashaan Carter. The barn is over one hundred years old. It is a majestic and rustic space. The retreats are self-directed. We encourage artists to take time getting into their creative groove. There is no requirement for when and how long you record. You can do what you want with your time at LGA.

Each resident will have their own private bedroom in the farm house. There is a shared bathroom. Three meals a day will be prepared by the chef-in-residence. Dinner is a nightly communal meal.

Each group is offered a $1000 honorarium.

Recording Space

The recording space is in LGA’s barn. The unfinished, rustic and majestic space is engineered by Rashaan Carter. He has spent years finding the sweet spots in the barn. The barn is equipped for acoustic, amplified or electronic sessions. Because of the nature of the space, full isolation is impossible– recordings pick up the sounds of the natural world around it.

Musicians will be reimbursed for round trip train/bus travel to and from the New York/Tri-state area.  If you drive your own car, you will be reimbursed at a rate up to $100 for gas and tolls.

Looking Glass Arts prioritizes applications from Black and Brown people. Additionally, we highly encourage those of all sexual orientations, gender expressions and gender identities to apply.
