Programs 2026
-
Looking Glass Arts exists to support artists unaccustomed to being supported. This is our mission. So we encourage you to apply to our residency program that is site-specific.
Our property was once a dairy farm. And so we use the barn, the milkhouse, the bullpen. All of these spaces have been adapted to now be spaces where we can record, we can write, whatever your artistic practice may be.
We are in a hamlet in upstate New York on the edge of the Catskill Mountains in the Mohawk Valley. We're in a beautiful little town full of other creative people who have been so supportive of our efforts over the years as Looking Glass was born and is continuing to grow.
Over the years, a majority of the artists that have come to Looking Glass have come from New York City, being that we have a proximity to the city. But we've also had people from actually all over the world. People have come from Mexico, from Germany. So wherever you are in the world, we encourage you to apply to Looking Glass.
We do our best to mitigate what can be a financial hardship for people, for some people, in going to a residency because that means there's a week where you don't work. So that means there's a week where you may not be earning money. And if that is the case, we are here. We offer everybody an honorarium.
Our residency program takes place over the summertime months, June, July, and August. Each residency runs for approximately a week, five to seven days, depending on the residency. You'll see as you look through our website that we have a number of different residency programs. Please take a look and see which one would best suit what your artistic practice is. We encourage you to find the one that best suits your needs and apply to that one. It doesn't make sense for us if you apply to all of them. So find the one that makes best sense for you and we look forward to reading your application.
When you come up to Looking Glass Arts, you'll either take the Amtrak to Hudson or Albany, New York and someone from Looking Glass will come and pick you up and drive you to the property. Or if you have a car, you'll drive yourself there. Depending on which residency you're up for, you'll either stay in the farmhouse, which is across the street from the barn, or we're expanding this year to include housing at some of our neighbor's homes when they're away. Depending on which residency you apply for, that will dictate where you stay.
The meals we have at Looking Glass are breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Breakfast you can make on your own and have it whenever you like. Lunch will be delivered daily to us from a local caterer or a local restaurant and that you can also come and pick up as you wish when you want it. The only meal that we have all together is dinner. We sit around the table either outside in the backyard or if it's raining, we sit in the dining room in the house and we enjoy dinner together prepared by a resident chef.
When you come up for your residency, you don't need to bring almost anything with you. We're going to give you everything you need. We're going to feed you. We're going to house you. We're going to give you places to work. So you can leave all of the stuff of the everyday that we all have to do traveling and remembering our to-do lists, you can leave all that behind and know that you're going to be beautifully taken care of at Looking Glass Arts.
Of course, each artist is going to have their own bedroom. It's possible you'll have a shared bathroom with another artist, but you will have absolute privacy in your own bedroom and a place to work.
When you come up for residency, it's an immersive experience. We are in the mountains. You can hike if that's your thing. You can take long walks along the road. There's some beautiful swimming holes. It's a beautiful, beautiful place to spend summertime in New York state. The understanding, of course, is that you've come to work on your artistic practice, which also means that you will not be working, which means you're not going to have to engage with Zoom calls to get into the conference meeting at work or have any deadlines while you're at Looking Glass. You'll leave all of that behind and come just to work on your artistic practice.
The residencies can be five to seven days long. So much can happen in the countryside in just five or seven days. We unwind, we find our practice, we find our groove as we find the ways we like to work in the space. And what's so beautiful is when you leave, the hope is not only have you been able to create something that you enjoy, but that you'll pay it forward as we go on throughout our days. So please apply. We look forward to seeing your application.
